Allocated north of La Graciosa on the main archipelago island Chinijo a mile northwest of Lanzarote. This paradise beach of Las Conchas appears out of nowhere. The sand found here is white and coarse with a rural surrounding and looks out to the nearby deserted islands of Montaña Clara and Alegranza. The view is spectacular and allows you to see the true extent of this wonderful landscape. Due to its 600 metres in length and its generous width it allows bathers to get lost in the midst of this natural oasis.

The river that separates the north with the other islands previously mentioned make the water of Las Conchas permanently unsettled. However, bathing on this shore is very safe although we must pay agreat deal of attention when swimming with children. Its location and the predominance of strong trade winds caneffect our decision as to whether Las Conchas is an ideal choice to visit on a sunny day. On a clear day when there is a searing heat the choice to visit this beach would be very wise because the constant breeze alleviates the effects of the sun.

You can reach Las Conchas either by foot (45 minutes), cycling (20 minutes) or by taxi from La Graciosa (5 minutes). Its privacy and its unbeatable conditions make for a perfect day by the beach, especially if with children. From ten or eleven o clock in the morning until the sun goes down, seven or eight in the evening, you can enjoy a full day on the beach. Make the most of playing all kinds of beach activities allowing you to pass the time peacefully, for example pit pat, flying a kite on the horizon of the mountain of Clara, finishing off a good book, by having a nap, by taking a stroll along the shore…

The bay of El Ancla (also known as the kings’ beach due to its proximity to the kings’ residence Las Maretas. This property was given as a gift to the King of Spain from King Hussein of Jordan and is now known as a national world heritage)is at the entrance of Costa Teguise when coming from Arrecife and is known as one of the best bathing areas of this tourist destination. Its main downfall comes from the fact that it is fairly short in length and that it is frequently visited by residents on the island. In the early hours of the day it is the perfect location.

The few people that you meet at this time are taking the opportunity to walk along the admirable seas shore. By midday the bay is busy, however the beaches natural stoned pier allows those to stop and relax in a more spacious environment. Its calm waters are of amazing bright colours. Just by taking a glance you won’t be able to resist! The wind is a faithful friend of the life in Costa Teguise however does not have any knock on effect to this wonderful bay. The shores safety allows you to forget about the kids and the deepest pool is protected by a natural pier making it an ideal place to go for a lengthy swim.

El Ancla is accessed via steps. Within the entrance surroundings there are plenty of parking spaces. Its fine black sand is in perfect condition and on your way out having spent your day on the beach you will come across some public showers at your disposal.

What to do before and after:

Just a stone’s throw away from this bay and you will come across the promenade of Bastian. Here there is a magnificent terrace called Villa Toledo where you can order something of the menu. As you are in the heart of Costa Tequise why not visit La Repikada or El Bocadito and enjoy some tapas.

- Map.

It has 390 meters of black sand with a width of approximately eight meters. La Arena nurtures in the magnificent conditions of the southeast coast of Lanzarote, sheltered from strong prevailing winds and almost always clear. The beach is situated only a few steps away from the peaceful marine village of Playa Quemada. When there is a low tide it is possible to reach the beach by foot, previously you will pass through Cala de Quemada (in the same village), but when there is high tide we should consider climbing a small mountain and make our way down the old goats paths that are frequently seen in the natural protected area of Los Ajaches.

From above the figure of La Arena is majestic. A postcard frame is created thanks to the powerful image of the black sand blending in its soft blue waters. The stillness of the sea and the striking high temperatures on this coastal strip allow you to swim all year round. This beach, together with its neighbouring beaches Cala de Quemada and El Pozo (a little further south), have the most parsimonious pockets of the island, but ironically are the least busy. Your stay, therefore, guarantees you maximum serenity.

The south margin of La Arena is dominated by its spacious black sand, however on the north side by its natural stone slabs that are surrounded by nearby smaller rocky mountain peaks. The pervasive silence is broken by the murmur of the sea perched on the shore. Some seagulls can be seen flying in an apparent merciful attitude over the few bathers that are below. If only the seagulls were to realize the beneficial effects of being surrounded by the magical aridness of La Arena. For those that are adventurous or that are nature lovers we recommend that you complement your swim with a prior trek crossing Los Ajaches, Femes – Playa Quemada.

What to do before or after:

An ideal tourist route for bathers on the south coast of Lanzarote, close enough to allow you the opportunity to visit Timanfaya. If you are on the beach we recommend that you combine the pleasure of a prior trek crossing between Femes and Playa Quemada. Bathing knows best! With respect to excellent cuisine, we recommend Salmarina.

- Map.

We would like to advise you that before beginning your tranquil beach route, that this area does not have the best swimming conditions. Strong currents on this southwest coast of Lanzarote have great forces. Here there is always present a red flag indicating that you should be aware of the dangers when visiting or using the beach. Not surprisingly, this magnificent stretch of just over 800 meters of black sand is a short distance from Los Hervideros, with its fragile space there can be seen swaying submarines looking for a way out. Soaking your feet in the seas shore is the best alternative to a safe bathe.

Even though the sea is rough, ironically due to the intriguing colour of the black sand it portrays a sense of quietness and wellbeing. The sand fancifully collects the remains of the seaweed that is washed up by the tide. With little use, Janubio is a peaceful haven of relaxation and contemplation. Its relaxation is due to the lack of noise and that of only the prevailing winds and comtemplation because of the proximity of the majestic Salinas de Janubio. Its green lake and its dense black sandy beach result in an eye catching explosion of colours that is worth seeing. Because of its location, when visiting Jaunbio you have the optional southern on route stops of visiting either the Timanfaya volcano, El Golfo and Charco de los Clicos and the powerful landscape of in and around Salinas de Janubio itself.

What to do before and after:

The perfect complements when passing through the black sand of Janubio would be to visit its neighboring villages of Salinas, Los Hervideros and Charco de los Clicos. Why not visit the Timanfaya National Park, eat fresh fish in El Golfo, and if not take a trip through the privileged landscaped route of La Geria and try some wine tasting.

- Map.

It is better known as a hotels beach as it joins with one of the first hotels that was ever built on the island, Hotel Fariones (late 60th century). Cueva de doña Juana is one of the most peaceful coves in this tourist area. As well as its neighboring beach Pila de la barrilla, they are away from the crowded beaches of Puerto del Carmen such as Playa Blanca, Matagorda and Los Pocillos. In addition to its outstanding conditions in terms of its quality and excellence of its black sand and its appealing water, it is also known for its superb sheltering of the constant wind that blows in Lanzarote. An assurance of a peaceful atmosphere is also helped by the constant shine of the sun in this part of Puerto del Carmen.

Thus, Cueva de doña Juana allows one in comfort to go for that early leisurely morning walk, build sandcastles with the children or go for a swim in a natural environment. Being only 60 meters long can lead to confusion. Days that there is a low tide results in the beach appearing bigger thanks to its remarkable width. However, when there is a high tide there is little difference due to the lying natural stones on the black sand and in the coves.

The only downfall that Cueva de doña Juana has is its difficult access. It can be done however by following the natural stoned walkway that links Pila de la barrilla with this cove. To arrive on the beach you must make your way down some stoned steps that you will notice have eroded over time.
It makes sense therefore why the beach is as popular as is the hotel. Even though the walkway is of poor condition it does not stop tourists nor fellow citizens in visiting and enjoying this magnificent beach whether staying in the Hotel Fariones or not.

Another aspect of Cueva de Dona Juana is its proximity to a small but wonderful port. When there is a high tide you have the perfect haven for tranquility and a relaxing swim, not only this but due to the leisurely space it is possible to jump into the water at various heights and in different positions. Try either to dive head first, feet first whilst holding your nose or by jumping in as if you were a water bomb causing a great splash as you hit the water.

What to do before and after:

The magnificent Fariones Sport Centre allows you the opportunity to play tennis, paddle or fronton. You could enjoy a pleasant coffee in the shade of Los Clásicos del Café. Have lunch in Puerto Bahía or in Bodega and if not have a refreshing beer as the sun sets in the old town of Puerto del Carmen. Here you will find the San Miguel bar.

The hardest thing is to arrive to Las Malvas. It is a small black sand cove that consists of barely 300 metres due to the erosion of the ancient lava flows of Timanfaya. The mystery goes that the immense flow of lava floods from the fiery mountains of Lanzarote also flooded our minds.Las Malvas is reached by going through the village centreof Tinajo, it is clearly signposted. From inland to this coastal area you must travel approximately five metres on dirt tracks.

Las Malvas faces north towards the Atlantic Ocean and is a permanent gateway as to where trade winds fly over the island. As can be imagined therefore it is a windy beach although the surrounding black sand that mainly consists of volcanic lava occasionally creates wind barriers isolating you from the wind. This small beach has an intriguing look about it thanks to its attractive shape, its flood of volcanic ash and a stream of malvas dotted all over the scenery. Two huge natural rock pillars help to ease the Atlantic current allowing you to bathe safely, however the seabed can be a little rocky so it is recommended that you wear shoes when entering so that you can bathe with ease. Las Malvas is one of the least visited beaches on Lanzarote therefore it is ideal for those who want to get away from the tourist and crowded beaches on the island.

What to do before or after:

Why not also enjoy one of the most appealing trails on the island by the road from Mancha Blanca to Caldera Blanca. On the way you could visit the Ethnographic museum El Patio obviously allowing you to pass by and stop of at Timanfaya. For lunch and dinner we recommend Amendoa in the nearly village of La Santa.

The long beach of Guacimeta is hardly ever peaceful due to the constant interruption of overhead aircrafts arriving into Lanzarotes airport.
The sand on this bay is splendid. It is fine and melts away when the sea rises in its calm waters, just like a postcard. On this stretch of coastline there is almost always a strong breeze (its main downfall) and therefore it is advisable to take shelter behind the small natural stoned coves as you get closer to the airport. Guacimeta is connected northerly by the beach town of Playa Honda and to the south by that of Matagorda’s in Puerto Del Carmen. Its wide space joined by its ample width allows children to play beach games.

Guacimeta is reached via the busy road of Playa Honda. A dormitory town approximately five kilometres from Arrecife which has a kilometre long street of restaurants and nice terraces. Guacimeta is an ideal location for taking part in a day of sport for example a bike ride between Puerto del Carmen, Playa Honda or Arrecife (pathway only), sunbathing, or food or beer on the terraces while the sunsets.

What to do before and after:

Enjoy some tapas in Los Conejeros Beach, canarian dishes tapas style at affordable prices.

- Map.

This is known as one of the little known treasures of Lanzarote. The natural pools of Charcones form a haven of relaxation. Away from the busy tourist resort of Playa Blanca and its densely populated beaches, to get lost in this natural sea would result in a powerful battery charge. On the clear sheltered southwest coastline of the island, Los Charcones benefits from a cooler climate due to the dominate winds within the area which create a bearable temperature.

The pools extend from approximately two kilometers north of Faro de Pechiguera heading northwards towards Janubio. The most spectacular coves coincide with a nearby abandoned hotel. This gloomy building has been standing since the mid 70´s and ruins this beautiful and majestic stretch of coastline. As the sea renews the pools waters, orographic shapes are formed in the lava passages.

Entering is safe although extreme caution is necessary during your journey to reach the pools. Once you are down its time to enjoy. There are some pools that have great depth and allow you to take big jumps and others that are shallow inviting you to a relaxing dip, clearly a matter of taste.
The quietness of this area allows relaxation. A good book would be the perfect companion. If in a group you could take advantage of the stoned coves and make a barbecue. Another option would be to go on a natural pools tour. Walk from the south to the north and take the opportunity to bathe in each appealing pool that you stumble upon. In summer it is possible to stay on Los Charcones until 8 o´clock in the evening, although it is important to keep an eye on the lack of light that could cause you difficulty in returning to your car.

What to do before or after:

An ideal tourist route for bathers on the south coast of Lanzarote, close enough to allow you the opportunity to visit Timanfaya. Five minutes’ drive by car from Playa Blanca, enjoy this beach and why not compliment your visit with a good lunch or dinner, a coffee or light refreshment. Why not dine in one of our recommended local restaurants, Casa Brigida or Aromas Yaiza. Or simply enjoy a good coffee in the company of good music in Café del Mar. If you have children another option before or after visiting the beach would be to enjoy a game of bowling.

From 11:30 on a summer`s morning you can already feel the first rays of sun in the northern town of Lanzarote, Punta Mujeres. However it is occasionally possible that the sky is cloudy throughout the entire day. Even on days like this the house is tidy, the fish is prepared and ready for the oven and the husband is socialising in the towns bar. At this time you will find the children hanging around the bay playing, fishing or even jumping off the water´s edge. Perhaps it’s the best time of the day to take a dip in any of the many pools that dot the coastline of Punta Mujeres.

Unlike the centre and the south of Lanzarote, the northern part of the island enjoys a milder climate. A constant breeze helps to soften the suns heat and occasionally between Arrecife and Playa Blanca it can get very sticky and uncomfortable. It would seem silly to bathe withinthis area if not at the time mentioned. The sky is almost always cloudy up until midday other than in July and August and from then onwards the sky becomes clear.

The pools run along the entire south bay of this northern village. Its natural shape has been formed by the solidified lava that has been left behind from the nearby volcanic eruption of La Corona. To reach the pools you need to make your way down the strong and secure steps which lead you directly down to the natural pools. The rocks surface is generally flat and is not slippery making it easy to remain on the rocks edge therefore is also an ideal location to visit with children.

The village of Punta Mujeres is very quiet. It hasapproximately only 500 residents welcoming comfort and welfare. Its urban structure is a little ragged but this doesn`t stop it from remaining quaint and charming.Surrounding the natural pools you will see many peculiarlooking houses. You will also be struck by a big naturalstone. From here you can look out to the horizon and on days when there is a high tide you can use this stone as a springboard to jump into the sea. There are two pools that are very popular in this area, the first that you come across when arriving from the south and the centre one(near the village pub). In the other bays you may feel a little more tranquility allowing you to read a good book, sunbathe or to simply watch the local fishermen in their small boats catch the fish of the day.

What to do before or after:

Punta Mujeres is one step away from Cueva de losVerdes and Jameos Del Agua, two of the most spectacular visiting attractions on Lanzarote. In thenearby village of Arrieta you can dine in one of the most popular fresh fish restaurant on the island. If travelling with children why not visit the Tropical Park and LasGuinate Pardelas of Órzola.
