MAP OF LOCATION:

The organization in charge of protecting the works of the Lanzarote artist César Manrique houses the two main facets of the artist’s creation: his paintings and his public art works in the permanent museum of Taro de Tahíche, headquarters of the <a href="http://www.fcmanrique.org/index.php?fl=1"target=\"_blank\">Fundación César Manrique (FCM), which was the residence of the creator.

The first stop in the museum has on display the contemporary art collection of the FCM. It is possible to observe the pictorial works of Pedro González, Chirino or Gerardo Delgado and the engravings of friends of Manrique and luminaries of Spanish art like Picasso, Tàpies, Joan Miró o Chillida. After seeing the samples of contemporary art owned by the Foundation we go on to the rooms of buildings and sketches, where some of Manrique’s older works involved in public spaces are on display.

The blueprints of the <a href="http://www.centrosturisticos.com/centros/CENTROS/published_es/DEFAULT/mirador_del_rio.html"target=\"_blank\">Mirador del Río [Del Río Overlook] (Lanzarote), the <a href="http://www.conoceceuta.com/0060-01-10%20galeria_de_fotos_parque_maritimo.htm"target=\"_blank\">Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo [Maritime Park of the Mediterranean] (Ceuta) or the Seville Cultural Center can be admired in this room, along with the sketches for Manrique’s classic wind toys or the logo of the <a href="http://www.centrosturisticos.com/centros/CENTROS/published_es/DEFAULT/timanfaya.html"target=\"_blank\">Timanfaya National Park (Lanzarote).

The art museum is momentarily interrupted with the descent to the lower floor, to the natural volcanic bubbles, of what was Manrique’s residence. The visitor will be able to enjoy a living example of what is considered nature-art with the rooms created by the Lanzarote artist by taking advantage of the natural structure of the lava and its continuation in the jameo-pool [collapsed lava tunnel made into a swimming pool] in one of the gardens of the building.

Manrique’s most outstanding pictorial works (Manrique Collection) constitutes the last stop at the permanent museum of the FCM. The strong colors he used, giving nature shapes to his oil paintings, is the most attractive aspect of his work. Having concluded the visit, you can walk around the ample gardens of Taro de Tahíche, where you will be able to see the large mural that the Lanzarote artist built with volcanic stone and tiles in a drawing for the opening of the César Manrique Foundation in 1992.

The Manrique organization has an extensive list of cultural and formative activities in different fields every year, which has made it one of the most important cultural organizations in Spain. Besides, it exercises on the island and in the Canaries an ecological defense role in the field of awareness and participation in the most important public debates in Lanzarote. We will keep you updated about these in <a href="http://ociolanzarote.com/ocio-hoy/"target=\"_blank\">ocio daily in ociolanzarote.com.

What to do before and after: We can approach <a href="http://www.centrosturisticos.com/centros/CENTROS/published_es/DEFAULT/jardin_cactus.html"target=\"_blank\">Jardín de Cactus [Cactus Garden] (Guatiza), a public work of Manrique’s, take a stroll through the historical village of <a href="http://www.teguise.com/fotos.html"target=\"_blank\">Teguise, a few miles from the Foundation, where there are also various restaurants, cafés and terraces. For a cup of coffee or tea or a drink we recommend Cafetería Cejas or Hespérides. For lunch or dinner, Ikarus.

MAP OF LOCATION:

Bodegas Stratvs provides an interesting cultural offer that covers the whole process of wine making. From the arrival and selection of the grapes that will make the malvasia dessert wine and red wine, the maceration and fermentation phase, the aging process up to the final bottling. The visit begins with an explanation showing the twines of a grapevine outside this warehouse in La Geria’s natural space. It is surprising that this arid land can produce the annual fruit of August. Having seen the birthplace of wine, you then go on to the room where the grapes are selected, and then stored at a low temperature. The preliminary period of production of the wine ends with the introduction to
Bodegas Stratvs.

This huge infrastructure of natural stone and wood is worth seeing just for itself. The inside is very well organized, with ultramodern machinery and the whole enological path of wine production. The reservoirs and presses that will be used to macerate the grapes, and the barrels and bottling machines all work separately but in perfect coordination to obtain the best wine possible. The visit is conducted by a specialized guide in Spanish, English and German. The guide details the peculiarities of each of the mentioned stages. The cultural-scientific tour is done in approximately half an hour thanks to the didactic explanations, with the essential technicalities about the subject, although they are clearly explained, and most importantly, without an overdose of information.

The visit includes a more recreational and contemplative part. The convention hall is striking, as much as the day and night restaurants on the premises, with different perspectives and views of the spectacular landscape of La Geria. Bodegas Stratvs includes the gourmet shop, with a selection of waters, spices, cheeses and different culinary delicacies, apart from, of course, the young wines from their French oak barrels.

The visit ends with some wine tasting in a corner of the gourmet store. In our case, it’s a sparkling semi-sweet Diego wine. Outside, you can savor the wine in some nooks with modern furniture, while watching the explosions of colors of nature.

What to do before and after: Very near this winery is an enchanting place for some tapas and wine with the unsurpassable views of the beautiful landscape of La Geria, El Chupadero.

MAP OF LOCATION:

Museo del Vino de El Grifo [El Grifo Museum of Wine] is located in the old wineries built on volcanic rock in 1775. The building is pure Lanzarote traditional architecture, with thick volcanic rock walls and roofed with wooden beams that came mostly from the scrapping of ships. By itself, the building is a place to contemplate and enjoy. The visit proposed in the museum aims at paying homage to all the utensils that have extracted the best juices from the Lanzarote grapes. Among the different artifacts and winery machinery displayed there are some very odd pieces. A shuffling pump of 1865, a corking machine of 1870, and the antique grape presses, an 18th century copper distiller, a very old ebullioscope and distillers, the sulphating and pulverizing machinery or the old press (see picture at the upper right) where they used to press the grapes.

Visitors are given a general explanation about all the pieces, which are arranged by function, and about their importance in the production process of wine. Unfortunately what is missing is an explanation of how each of these pieces interconnected with each other, which would make the overall winemaking process easier to understand.

One of the most attractive parts of the museum is the complete barrel-making workshop offered by Rafael Corujo de León (see top picture). The machinery and precise instruments used to make the barrels that will contain the future malvasia wine, as well as the crafty process to finish these reservoirs attract the visitor’s attention. It is difficult to imagine the suffering hands of the artisans which very often must have gotten stuck in the machinery. It is also hard to believe how much patience must have been needed to leave a barrel in perfect condition… one barrel, one of the hundreds that can be found at Bodegas El Grifo.

To cap off this visit there is El Salón de la Cata [The Wine Tasting Room] (see photograph on the right), where we can taste the wine or make a toast accompanied by some cheese. The enchanting place has that shine, that charm which invites you to take a delicious sip of dry, semi-dry or dry house Malvasia, the sweetish Moscatel, make a toast with the sparkling Malvasia Brut, treat your palate with a 1956 white wine… For a modest price we can enjoy different tastings.

What to do before and after: Relatively close to this museum we can go for some tapas to Monumento al Campesino.
MAP OF LOCATION:

An escape out of despair. In 1845, some farmers from Tiagua, who had no options for the future, asked the Marquis de la Quinta Roja, Francisco Ponte, for permission to cultivate some virgin lands on his property. A century later, in 1947, the estate became the great agricultural area of Lanzarote. More than 25 farmers broke their backs working the land, helped by more than 20 camels, to move the agricultural products to all points of the insular geography.

In the late 1980s, a group of people came up with the idea of transforming this large estate located in Tiagua into the ethnographic center of Lanzarote’s culture and traditions. Their efforts to achieve this came to fruition on January 15, 1994. On that day, at ten o’clock in the morning, two German couples from Frankfurt were the first to experience this trip in time, about life on the island in the past centuries.

The ethnographic museum is located in the old manor house. The materials on display are very well organized and there are simple explanations at every station, which allow the visitor to understand those hard times. The photographs that complement the exhibit give testimony to the use of the volcanic soil for produce: mainly onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and corn. The museum features mainly pottery, ceramic work and other artisan creations such as the typical roseta embroidery and pieces of clothing that belonged to the old farmers.

The press is still maintained as it was, which makes us appreciate the genius of the old times to make the roasted grain flour locally known as gofio. The Bodega [warehouse], the Tahona [bakery] and the Capilla [chapel] are in similar condition, although some information allowing us to understand their function is missing. On the other hand, there are plenty of explanations in the old farmer’s bedroom. The beds speak for themselves, with a spittoon to avoid going out to the cold patio where the toilet was, a small night table and the image of the Virgin Mary guaranteeing good rest.

The great interior patio that connects all the strategic points of the museum must have had a prominent place in the social life of the workers. It seems ideal for some rest in the shade, playing games and partying whenever work allowed it. The rooms have been kept meticulously, which makes the stay at the museum feel natural. The management of El Patio has also put a lot of effort in maintaining the flowers, the gardens and the large agricultural area behind the ethnographical museum in great conditions.

Having concluded the visit to the museum, we continue with the second part of the stay: the main garden of the old manor house, the windmill and, around it, the slow and random ambling of the house chickens. To top it all off, El Patio offers its visitors an aperitif of Malvasia wine accompanied by a delicacy of the earth. You can enjoy this treat at the Bodegón, which has a spacious terrace with large tables and benches. In our case, on this September day in 2007, it consisted of toasted bread spread with chorizo chacón sausage, and washed down with some nice Malvasia wine.

What to do before and after: A few miles away by car you can have lunch at Monumento al Campesino. You can have a cup of coffee or tea in the neighboring village of Teguise at Cafetería Cejas or at Hespérides.

STATE PLAN:

The Ethnographic Museum Tanit sits in the old cellars of a traditional Canarian eighteenth century, specifically 1735. Its premises host a full vision, although perhaps a bit messy, property and equipment used by our ancestors to the middle of the twentieth century. All the patterns of past life, work, family, leisure and culture, find their space with the rich material carefully maintained by the founders of the cultural facility, Jose Perdomo and Remi Quintana.

Agriculture and viticulture are two basic references of the museum. The complete machinery exposed, the crusher, the plow, Saranda, the sieve, threshing or hand mill, able to compose an accurate idea of the laborious task of surviving and sacrificed at the time. Among the pieces, the old winery stands Tanit. The complex container (a wooden press), which trod the grapes to obtain must, was in operation from 1780-1902. His condition (see photo at right), with 228 years of life, is worthy of wonder and occupied prominent space in the museum.

The main block of the cultural area encompasses a large collection of ceramic and stone, old machines work from home as the treacherous, the spinning wheel and reel, the colorful folk costumes of men and women (see photo at right) and as various pieces relating to traditional entertainment such as musical instruments, launch this lute and guitar. There is plenty of material, which sometimes is missing the appropriate explanations to bring us.

In public areas, outdoors, find the tanks, the mounts of donkeys and camels, water distillers and other curiosities that lead to a replica of a chapel and a typical Lanzarote canary vented colorful garden from the prickly pears, and figs piteras and carriages that adorn this space.

Next to the garden room is the Princesa Ico. It presents a collection of antique weapons: pistols, shotguns, grenades and a spectacular falconete nineteenth century, he had to carry 300 grams of powder to fire a projectile. In this room is complemented by the attention of the museum with the costumes of the past, such as hats and clothing for The Diabletes of Teguise. They also call attention to the bunk bed and carefully guarded.

The route by Tanit can conclude with the museum shop where the house is committed to historical and ethnographic literature on the Canary Islands and Lanzarote.

STATE PLAN:

“Who, who was not taken for a madman or fool, would be able to tell our parents that we would go by plane to Las Palmas in the short time of one hour?”, Melquiades, old times, new times, published in Forecasts (06-07-1946)

From Junker 52, Iberia descacharrado the supersonic Concorde. From the tiny military base as a place of welcome to the four existing terminals. From Junker off two passengers on that flight 52 Opening June 12, 1946 to over five million passengers annually by hovering around Lanzarote Airport today. This is the resulting picture of the museum built by Aena in units of the first inlet to the island by air. A journey through the history of Lanzarote airport surface that provides a strong statistical and graphic account of the profound changes experienced by the island since the mid-twentieth century.

However, before that upholds Guacimeta Lanzarote airport, the locals could enjoy marveling at the arrivals of different seaplanes to Arrecife. The first event in 1919 when French airmen Henry James Roujard Lefranc and were forced to land at the capital’s waters in a tandem-Levy George GL-40. Five years later, in 1924, Ramón Franco, Spanish dictator brother of the future, captivated people Reef (see photo above) with his arrival in the Dornier flying boat in the bay arrecifeña Wall. The marvelous instant, present at the Aeronautical Museum, was the work of Heitz Achilles.

As stated in the citizen Melquiades Forecasts in 1946 (in the quote that heads this information), who was going to say to Lanzarote than 20 years after the arrival of these seaplanes would fly to Las Palmas and walk in an hour Vegueta approx. And after losing the respect and fear, to miracle became air transport vehicle to see the world (like the image on the right, with The crop back to Lanzarote after a show in Las Palmas). The historic photo exhibit also houses the German airship Graff Zeppelin and low flight over the capital of Gran Canaria years before World War II.

The historical itinerary is complemented by the exposure of different materials from Lanzarote airport has been stored since 1946: rudimentary gauges wind speed, ancient telephones, tape, shipping more than characteristic of a fruit of an airport (see photo on left ), several submissions by the charts … Very striking is the involvement of the Cabildo of Lanzarote in the enclosure improvements. From 1948 to 1958 the island institution invested a whopping 411 215 pesetas peseta and 98 cents … also at the time. What money? With the direction of the first cover with dignity Tours: buying carpets, paint for the reception room, paved runway, etc.

The null expectation of Lanzarote airport maiden voyage on 12 June 1946, contrasts with the importance in the economic and cultural life of Lanzarote today. The Aviation Museum that combines time travel. The huge graph depicting the letter carrier from the Canary Islands today attests to the complex transformation experienced in the archipelago. Be left in the hand of God to form a tourism industry and cost of the first order in just half a century. A revolution that is well reflected in the museum’s audio-visual, with the voices of the main protagonists of that little old airport site in Lanzarote in the mid-nineteenth century.

Despite its historical character, the Aeronautical Museum contains many elements entertainment for children and adolescents. Photographs and models of the evolution of the airplanes that have crossed the sky from Lanzarote (see photo above right) are showing that intergenerational perspective.

STATE PLAN:

“Listen, please, those bugs where?”-You ask the guide, thinking from the Caribbean, an interruption of audiovisual vision you propose as an introduction to Cetacean Museum . – “Son of here , deep sea canaries “, I answered politely.” Oh dear “cried inwardly, complaining bitterly about the sharp ignorance in which you lived in this area. Since the newly operated that removed the blindfold: Light. Light, bright, the maritime city of lights put in place since 2005 in the building of the former shipyard of Puerto Calero by the Society for the Study of Cetaceans in the Canary Islands (SECAC) and marina development company.

Miss will extinguish the light of the dressing room and return projections to the magical world of beaked whales, fish species, the varied marine flora canaria mantles of jellyfish, tours of thousands of fish cruising the Atlantic … 15 minutes introductory film that put you in a position of where you and prepare you to understand the rest of the stops of the museum.

The next station is concentrated in a brief and entertaining didactic explanation of the organization around the world of cetaceans in the Canaries. 29 species known to inhabit the waters of the archipelago, but is suggested by the scientific community that there’s more. You are shown drawings of the most common: the bottlenose dolphin, Risso and tropical and the sperm whale, sperm whale fetuses and teeth or whiskers, depending on the type of whale, they have. Materials obtained primarily from the scientific work of Vidal Martín, president of the SECAC, the main promoter of the cultural institution and Cesar Manrique de Canarias Award 2007 .

With these ingredients, the visitor will be in line with what awaits him, the museum itself. The route is mainly concentrated on digesting the evolution of cetaceans, concrete explanations of their anatomy, supported by the display of skeletons hanging in the air and beautiful photographs taken in the deep sea canaries. The sound of the sea as background music, accompanied by the mythical dolphin squeaks, give greater realism to stay inside the museum. Do not forget the organization of consumer awareness of irreversible damage to the whale by the hand of man. Plastic bags, fishing ropes and cables found inside can lead to unfortunate untimely death of dolphin that is in his walk.

Not always true the saying, “good, brief, twice good.” Whale Museum you need more space, though available has dealt wisely, in our view. Cultural and scientific initiatives of this kind are rare in Lanzarote also constitute a qualified offer tourist entertainment. Ideal for family entertainment, especially for children, and a must see for every citizen of the island with at least curious about what Atlantic reveals the essence that we bathe.

MAP OF LOCATION:

In 1991, the interiors of the Castle of Santa Bárbara (Guanapay Mountain, Teguise) became the ethnographic museum with the aim of showing the emigrant past of the Canarian people. The old fortress, built in the 16th century by Sancho de Herrera was very important in defending the island from the constant invasions by pirates and corsairs. In the seven halls of the Emigrante Canario museum the double face, in the best of cases, of the migratory phenomenon is condensed: The dramatic abandonment of the home caused by 19th century poverty and the prosperity achieved in the Americas, the main destination of Canarian migration at that time, from where they would send valuable letters of change to their relatives who remained on the Archipelago.

Crossing the Atlantic Ocean became the best option to overcome the agricultural crisis that occurred in that century. That’s what made the migratory population undertake the suicidal voyage that the great ships of the kingdom of Spain offered. Passport in hand, and a small wooden suitcase filled with a few mementos, the Canarian emigrant mostly headed to the island of Cuba and Venezuela, although some other South American countries like Argentina and Uruguay received Canarians, as well as some places in the United States like Louisiana and San Antonio, Texas, which was founded by Lanzarote emigrants.

The birth of San Antonio, Texas, is one of the most curious aspects of the Museum of the Canarian Emigrant, where its founding records can be found. On August 1, 1731 the first municipal government of the city was constituted. The first mayor was the Lanzarote lawyer Juan Leal Goraz, who was born in Teguise. He was accompanied by another native of Teguise, Juan Curbelo as second councilman.

Although the visit inside the castle is very lively, there are some explanations missing for many of the materials displayed that would allow to follow the trail of the Canarian emigrant. The visit to the Museum of the Canarian Emigrant culminates in the top of the castle, from where it is possible to see Montaña Clara and Alegranza, the spectacular view of the cliff of Famara, and, among other points of interest, the pretty village of La Villa of Teguise.

What to do before and after: A walk through the old village of Teguise is a must. In addition, there are different gastronomical options, cafés and terraces in and around the village. For a cup of coffee or tea and a drink we recommend Cafetería Cejas or Hespérides. For lunch or dinner, the Ikarus.
