Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote

César Manrique

In 1966, Manrique returned to Lanzarote definitively. On the island, which then began its tourism development, promotes a model of intervention in the territory in terms of sustainability which sought to safeguard the natural and cultural heritage island model that was crucial in Lanzarote declaration as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993.

Timanfaya Natural Park

Inside the National Park there is a section of about 14 kilometers long conditioning for your visit. The road layout, perfectly camouflaged with the surroundings, is developed along the core of the eruptions which is located a concentration of elements of geological and geomorphological interest, of great rarity, as hornitos, caves and badlands.

Jameos del Agua

Jameos del Agua is the first Centre of Art, Culture and Tourism created by Cesar Manrique and is a reflection of one of its creative pillars: the harmony between nature and artistic creation. In the early sixties of the twentieth century, and due to the neglect of the environment, it is necessary to undertake cleaning and conditioning. Although the works widened over time, we can point to 1966 as the date of opening of the first phases to the public.

Mirador del Río

El Mirador del Río is located on top of Risco de Famara, at 475 meters, in the north of the island. From there you can see one of the most spectacular views of Lanzarote. This is one of the most representative architectural creations of Cesar Manrique, where the artist combine artistic and architectural details, in order to achieve an enthusiastic project of integrating art and nature.

Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo

The International Museum of Contemporary Art, MIAC, is located in the old military fort Castillo de San Jose in the port of Arrecife. The museum was established in 1975 to promote, collect and exhibit the most significant works of modern artistic creation.

Monumento al Campesino

The architectural ensemble of the Casa-Museo del Campesino and Fertility Monument consists of a series of buildings that are inspired by the traditional architecture of Lanzarote prototype, not playing a particular model exists, but combining the typical elements most characteristic of the different geographical areas of the island. In it are elements as representative as fireplaces, eras, tanks, patios, carpentry, winery …

Jardín de Cactus

El Jardín de Cactus is a magnificent example of an integrated architectural intervention in the landscape. Cesar Manrique makes this bold architectural complex binomial maintaining unwavering art and nature that permeates all space operations.

Cueva de los Verdes

La Cueva de los Verdes is located in the north of the island of Lanzarote, in the town of Haria, and integrated into the vast volcanic landscape of the Badlands National Monument of the Crown. Its formation is the result of eruptive activity of Volcán de la Corona (dated by geologists for about 3000-5000 years), which led to an extensive underground volcanic tunnel more than six miles long that runs from the volcanic cone to the sea.
