MAP OF LOCATION:

The International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC), which belongs to the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of the Town Council of Lanzarote, was created thanks to the initiative of César Manrique in 1975. It is located in a fortress built in the 18th century, the Castle of San José, and after some remodeling and rehabilitation, it has become the place that it is today: Two domed rooms that permanently house the MIAC Collection, with the Lasso Hall – dedicated to the Lanzarote artist Pancho Lasso – and the Canarian Artists Hall; and – on the lower floor – the temporary exhibits hall where the expositions and activities program is carried out.

The MIAC maintains a line of work centered on contemporary art through shows, workshops and conference projects and it supports creative production with projects like ArteLanzarote, Encuentro Bienal or Siglo XXI, A New Ethic, which envisions the museum as a space for dialogue about the evolution of culture and its impact on society.

What to do before and after: The location of the MIAC in the Castle of San José in Arrecife allows you to combine your cultural day with some pleasant conversation at Cafetería del Centro or
a gastronomic evening with the dishes of the restaurant of this 18th century fortress. Otherwise, you can have some good tapas at Los Conejeros or dinner at La Puntilla. There are also various options for nightlife in Lanzarote’s capital.
