Every September, the village of Mala (Haría) celebrates the Fiestas de Las Mercedes honoring Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes: a week featuring the romería and Baile del Romero, evening dances, hands-on workshops and religious ceremonies that bring together locals and visitors across northern Lanzarote.
When and where
- 2025 dates: pending official confirmation (typically the third week of September; in 2024 it ran from September 17–24).
- Location: Mala, municipality of Haría (north of Lanzarote).
- Main venues: Parish of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (Mass & procession), Sports Court (Water & Colors party), Mala Pool (diving workshop), village streets (romería & Baile del Romero).

What to expect (based on recent editions)
- Romería & Baile del Romero (Saturday evening), with local parrandas such as Son del Norte, El Golpito and Sondemar (2024 lineup).
- Solemn Mass & Procession (Tuesday, patron’s day) at the Parish of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes.
- Family activities: contests (tortilla, pastry), workshops (crafts, CPR), traditional games, playback, dance gala.
- Water & Colors party (usually at the Sports Court) and a diving workshop (tide-dependent) at Mala Pool.

Practical tips
- Arrive early for the romería, Baile del Romero and Mass/procession—these draw the largest crowds.
- Use interior streets for parking and follow temporary signage and emergency access rules.
- Public transport: IntercityBus Line 07 (Arrecife–Máguez) stops in Mala (main roadside stop). Check times and stops before you go.
Cultural context
Devotion to Las Mercedes in Mala dates back to the 19th–20th centuries, with the old hermitage and community life around the plaza. Today, the festival blends folklore (parrandas, romería, traditional attire) with hands-on activities for all ages, keeping the area’s agrarian and coastal character alive.
