Every summer, the coastal town of Puerto del Carmen on the island of Lanzarote hosts the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a beloved celebration honoring the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. While La Virgen del Carmen is traditionally celebrated on July 16, Puerto del Carmen holds its own unique festivities later in the summer. This year, the celebration will take place from July 28 to August 10.
This two-week celebration features a mix of religious tradition, cultural heritage, and community spirit. The festivities begin on July 28 with the decorating of the town’s streets using traditional paper flags. The final weekend highlights include a maritime procession on August 9, a land procession on August 10, and a fireworks display to close out the festival.
Throughout the event, visitors and residents can enjoy a diverse lineup of activities and performances, including live music, traditional folk dances, comedy shows, and family-friendly workshops. A special tradition in Lanzarote, the jolatero races—where participants race handmade tin-drum boats—will also take place this year.
One of the standout events is the Festival La Tiñosa y Más, which starts at 5pm on August 9. This celebration will showcase a variety of DJs, singers, and more.
The Fiestas de Nuestra Señora del Carmen reflect Lanzarote’s strong ties to the sea and its deep-rooted devotion to its patron saint. More than a religious event, the celebration is a vibrant expression of local culture, identity, and joy.
