Volcanic rocks are dark, dense rocks, rich in iron and with great heat retention. Applying them on the skin increases dilation of the blood and lymphatic vessels, which as a consequence gives the person a sensation of relaxation and well-being.
During a hot-stone session, the therapist places the stones at about 140°F [60° C] on several places like the spine, abdomen, hands, and among other spots, the toes. Normally, the therapist begins by placing some stones on key points of the spine, while he/she begins a soft massage with hot oil on the lower limbs. Once the legs have been manipulated, the massage is applied with the hot stones, providing a pleasant sensation. The rhythm change can be felt; the heat penetrates in the muscles, relaxing them. The operation is repeated on the back, on the front of the legs, and the hot stone massage concludes on the cervical area of the spine, the neck. A pampering of the body with which all the excess tension and stress disappear.
