Fresh fish including grouper, sea bass, blue marlin, and the two local catches sama and abae are the main dishes at Amanecer in Arriete, in the northeast of Lanzarote. This restaurant has a traditional local décor. There is a large indoor room, which is rather cold and unimpressive, and a spectacular terrace with an excellent view of the sea. If possible, and weather permitting, we recommend that you enjoy a nice fish filet right by the sea-it will taste better.
The Amanecer can really fill up, so it’s a good idea to arrive early, generally between 12:30 and 1 p.m., and enjoy some appetizers while you wait for a table. If you don’t, there is a chance that they’ll make you wait, just as they did in the summer of 2007 to the former president of Spain, Felipe González.
The appetizer menu is quite simple-garlic shrimp, steamed mussels, fresh cheese and salads, as well as some exquisite fish and shellfish soups. The main dishes feature the catch of the day. They carry no pretenses, but any selection is a satisfying choice. The sea bass and abae are delicious, as well as the grouper, blue marlin and sama. The desserts are concocted from traditional Canary recipes, like the torrijas French toasts or the almond cream bienmesabe. There isn’t an extensive wine list, but they are of good quality, especially considering the prices. The service is excellent, as the wait staff is accustomed to providing quick service to large crowds.
What to do before and after: La Garita beach is right next to Amanecer. Visit the Cactus Garden, Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes or marvel at Graciosa Island and the large islands of the Chinijo archipelago while enjoying a coffee at the Mirador del Río.
