Note: There is no space reserved for non-smokers. Hidden in the village of Conil (Yías) you will find Casa Juan Ramón. An attractive place with a variety of tapas located in a small warehouse typical of the Lanzarote buildings and on a cozy terrace. The decoration is very discreet, like a traditional restaurant, but inside you can look at the most curious aspect of its details: the signatures, sayings, and sentences that the clients of Casa Juan Ramón, black marker in hand, have written on the walls that surround the tables and chairs where the guests enjoy their food.
The menu offers a wide variety of tapas and larger dishes to share. We can open up our appetite with the popular Canary potato dish known as papas arrugadas and local cheeses, both cured and semi-cured. The salpicón de atún, which is a kind of tuna salad is passable; the grilled octopus is not great; the chipirones, or small squids, are tasty and cooked to perfection. The vueltas de solomillo beef dish and the pork are the constant dishes in the often-changing menu of Casa Juan Ramón. However, if you are thinking about meat, we suggest the fried rabbit, which is tasty.
The wine list is modest, based mainly on white and red Lanzarote wines, with little variety of others: Some Viña Norte from Tenerife, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The kitchen is very quick, making sure that on the table there are at least two dishes of the requested plates. The service is accurate and family like.
There is no music to accompany dessert or the drink that comes after it, which would enrich the pleasant atmosphere that is felt in the house. The music usually arises spontaneously in the evening, with guitars and small timples, Canarian guitars, prolonging the nights of Conil until the wee hours on Friday and Saturday nights. It is also worth mentioning that if the nights are dry, you can dine in the inviting outdoor terraces of Casa Juan Ramón.
What to do before and after: A few kilometers from Conil is the lively tourist nucleus of Puerto del Carmen with a great number of pubs, discos, pleasant terraces and cafes.
