Playa Blanca beach closed to swimmers since Tuesday, Sep 8. The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza ordered the temporary closure of the small town beach, the one in the center of the resort, after a sewage spill caused by a fault at the pumping station next to the sand. A red flag is flying and swimming is banned until Public Health laboratory samples confirm the water is safe again.

The town hall reported the fault to the Consorcio del Agua de Lanzarote, the public body responsible for repairing the station and stopping the spill. There is no reopening date: the beach will open once the test results allow it, and the town hall will announce it publicly at that point. Until then it asks residents and visitors to respect the red flag and use other beaches in the south.

This is the third closure of this beach in 2026. In late February it was shut for two days over bacterial contamination and reopened on Feb 26 after tests confirmed the water was safe. On June 26 it closed again after a blockage in the sewer network sent wastewater onto the shore. All three times the procedure has been the same: precautionary closure, Public Health samples, and reopening only on clean results.

What to do if you’re in Playa Blanca

The closure covers only the small beach, the one beside the seafront promenade in the town center. Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo, a few minutes’ walk away, remain open, as do the Papagayo coves east of the resort.
