IRONMAN Lanzarote 2027 will be the race’s 35th edition and the first organized directly by The IRONMAN Group. The Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa, SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, the Canary Islands government, the Ayuntamiento de Tías and the brand itself presented this new chapter on Monday, Aug 31; the race takes place in May 2027. The Canary Islands Triathlon Federation puts the expected date at Saturday, May 15.

Key details

The real change is who runs it. For more than three decades Club La Santa built the race; from 2027 The IRONMAN Group, owner of the brand, takes over. Its EMEA managing director, Thomas Veje Olsen, put it plainly: “As organizers of the event from 2027, we take on the responsibility of continuing the legacy of this legendary race with the utmost respect.” Cabildo president Oswaldo Betancort thanked Club La Santa for “the extraordinary work of growing this race into what it represents today.”

The numbers explain why the institutions treat it as a tourism asset and not only a sporting one. The last edition drew close to 2,000 entry requests, according to the Canary Islands deputy tourism minister, José Manuel Sanabria. And many participants arrive months early to train and learn the course, according to SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, which stretches the race’s effect well past competition weekend. Sports councilor Juan Monzón noted it is still rated “among the toughest in the world.”

The Ayuntamiento de Tías, home of the race in Puerto del Carmen, stays on as host. Its sports councilor, Ismael Cruz, described a competition that “is part of the history, the soul and the identity of Puerto del Carmen.”

What it means if you’re coming in May 2027

IRONMAN Lanzarote 2027 week fills Puerto del Carmen with triathletes and their supporters, and the bike course crosses half the island, so book accommodation early and expect road closures on race day. Registration runs through ironman.com; timings and traffic restrictions will be published by the organizer and the Cabildo closer to the date.
