The Parque César Manrique in Tinajo reopened on Monday, Sep 7, after a full rebuild costing €1,631,212 and funded by the EU’s Next Generation program. The park of El Calvario, as the village calls it, is now a space with no architectural barriers, an open-air stage, a sports area, a café and shade, joined to the seniors’ residence next door. It was the residence’s own residents who cut the ribbon.

What the park has now

The work, carried out by the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa on an 8,170-square-meter municipal plot, removed steps that had no alternative and created accessible entrances, ramps and routes. The ground was relaid with more than 3,350 square meters of stamped concrete, and the planters were filled with topsoil and picón and planted with native species.

There are four new things to use: a sports zone with a base for a bike lane and a calisthenics area; a stage built for performances, with dressing rooms; a café building with facilities; and a set of shaded areas made up of seven wood-and-steel pergolas and six fixed stainless-steel ones. The park also opens onto the seniors’ residence, which will use it as a walking space, with outdoor fitness equipment designed for older users.

What’s still to come, and who said so

Tinajo’s mayor, Jesús Machín, thanked the Cabildo, speaking in Spanish, for “having kept the commitment and the agreement made several years ago,” and set out what remains: in the coming months the children’s playground will be fully renewed and more shade and calisthenics equipment added, and “in the coming days a café right next to the playground will go out to tender.” Cabildo vice president María Jesús Tovar, who heads Planning and Project Coordination, credited her department’s technical staff; president Oswaldo Betancort spoke of “a Lanzarote that moves forward without giving up its identity.”

The project was awarded for €1,631,212.08 under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through Next Generation EU funds. The Ayuntamiento de Tinajo announced the start of works with a six-month delivery period.
