Los Volcanes Natural Park: new plan now in force
The natural resources management plan for Los Volcanes Natural Park is now in force. The Cabildo de Lanzarote published its approval in the official provincial gazette of Las Palmas on Wednesday, September 16, and the text set its entry into force 15 working days after that publication, a period that ended on October 7.

What changes in El Golfo and Yaiza
The most visible change is for El Golfo. The plan recognizes the coastal village in Yaiza as a consolidated urban area, something residents had asked for over many years. According to the Cabildo, this allows many owners to move ahead with the paperwork to register their properties legally and regularize their situation.
The plan also frees up land in Yaiza for future public facilities, including an expansion of the health center and upgrades to the municipal sports facilities. Some plots also move from protected natural rural land to rural settlement land.
Key facts about Los Volcanes Natural Park
The natural park covers more than 10,158 hectares across Tinajo, Yaiza and Tías, and surrounds Timanfaya National Park, which is a separate protected area. The plan sets the criteria for conserving, protecting, restoring and sustainably using its natural resources, and it is the reference for the management plans that follow.
The process began in June 2024. The document went through public consultation, received five formal objections and was reviewed by several bodies, including Spain’s Directorate General for the Coast and the Sea and the Ministry of Defense, before the Cabildo’s full council approved it in July. With the plan in force, the park regains its full legal standing.
