Visiting Lanzarote in February is one of the best decisions for those seeking winter sun without summer crowds. With temperatures between 18°C and 22°C (64-72°F), seven hours of daily sunshine and Carnival in full swing, February offers ideal conditions to explore the island on foot, by bike, or simply enjoying Europe’s most unique volcanic landscape.

Lanzarote weather in February

February is technically the coolest month in Lanzarote, but “cool” here means temperatures ranging from 14°C (57°F) at night to 21-22°C (70-72°F) during the day. For any Northern European, this feels like a late spring day.

February climate data:

Average daytime temperature: 18-22°C (64-72°F)
Average nighttime temperature: 13-15°C (55-59°F)
Sea temperature: 18-19°C (64-66°F)
Daily sunshine hours: 7 hours
Rainy days: 3-5 days (brief, light showers)
UV index: Moderate (sun protection recommended)

Northeast trade winds are common, especially on the coast and exposed areas. This makes February an excellent month for windsurfing and kitesurfing, but bring a light jacket for evenings.

Occasionally, Lanzarote experiences the calima: a warm wind carrying sand from the Sahara that can raise temperatures up to 10°C above normal and reduce visibility. These episodes typically last 2-3 days and are more frequent in winter.

Why February is ideal for visiting Lanzarote

Perfect weather for outdoor activities: February’s moderate temperatures are ideal for hiking, cycling and running. In summer, the heat can make walking through Timanfaya’s lava fields uncomfortable. In February, you can explore without exhaustion.

Fewer tourists, better prices: February is low season in the Canaries (except Carnival week). This means quieter beaches, restaurants without queues, and accommodation prices up to 30% lower than summer.

Carnival: The most important festival of the year in the Canary Islands. Throughout February, Lanzarote’s seven municipalities celebrate with parades, murgas (satirical musical groups), comparsas (dance troupes), and the traditional burial of the sardine. It’s the best time to experience local culture.

Whale watching season: Between November and March, Canarian waters welcome migratory species such as fin whales and sperm whales, joining the resident dolphins and pilot whales. February is peak season.

Green landscape: Winter’s scarce rains make the island greener than usual. The Famara cliffs and the north of the island show tones that disappear in the dry months.

Things to do in Lanzarote in February

Volcanic hiking

February is the best month for hiking Lanzarote’s volcanoes. Moderate temperatures allow you to enjoy routes that would be exhausting under summer sun.

Must-do trails:

Caldera Blanca: The island’s most spectacular route. 9 km skirting Lanzarote’s largest crater with views of Timanfaya. Moderate difficulty, 3-4 hours.

Volcán El Cuervo: Easy 4 km route that lets you enter inside a volcanic crater. Ideal for families. 1-1.5 hours.

Montaña Colorada: 3 km circuit around a reddish volcano colored by iron oxides. Easy, 1 hour.

Risco de Famara: Trail along the northern cliffs with views of La Graciosa. More demanding, better for experienced hikers.

Tip: Start early (before 10:00 am) to avoid the wind that typically picks up at midday. Bring water, sun protection and hiking boots.

Cycling and running

Lanzarote is a training destination for professional cyclists and triathletes from around the world. February offers perfect conditions: mild weather, empty roads and breathtaking landscapes.

The La Geria area, with its vineyards in volcanic pits, regularly hosts trail running races. The contrast between black earth, semicircular stone walls and fire mountains creates a landscape unique in the world.

For cyclists, routes through Los Volcanes Natural Park and the climb to Femés are classics. The island is relatively flat except in the north (Famara) and south (Los Ajaches).

Surfing and water sports

Famara is Lanzarote’s surfing mecca. In February, conditions are ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers: consistent waves and fewer people in the water than summer. Beginners will also find schools open year-round.

Consistent wind makes February excellent for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Costa Teguise and Playa de las Cucharas are the most popular spots.

Water temperature is 18-19°C (64-66°F), cool but perfectly swimmable with a short wetsuit or even without for the less cold-sensitive.

Whale and dolphin watching

Whale and dolphin watching excursions depart from Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero. February falls within the migratory season (November-March), when it’s possible to see species such as fin whales, sperm whales and pilot whales alongside resident bottlenose dolphins.

Chances of seeing dolphins are very high year-round. Whales are more elusive, but February offers good opportunities.

Wine tourism in La Geria

The La Geria valley, with its landscape of vineyards cultivated in volcanic pits protected by semicircular stone walls (zocos), is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Wineries offer volcanic malvasía tastings year-round.

February is perfect for visiting wineries: pleasant temperatures for strolling among vineyards and fewer tour groups than peak season. Wineries like El Grifo, Stratvs and La Geria offer guided tours with tastings.

Carnival

Lanzarote Carnival takes place throughout February in all municipalities, each with its own theme. Main parades happen in Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Puerto del Carmen, featuring murgas (satirical musical groups), comparsas (dance troupes), queen election galas and the traditional burial of the sardine that closes the festivities.

Carnival Tuesday (February 17 in 2026) is a local holiday in five municipalities.

César Manrique’s Art Centers

February is ideal for visiting Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Jardín de Cactus and Mirador del Río without summer queues. The underground auditoriums maintain a constant temperature of 19°C (66°F), perfect for escaping both cold and heat.

Additionally, the Escena Lanzarote festival programs dance and music performances in these spaces during February.

What to pack

Light summer clothing for daytime (t-shirts, shorts, dresses)
Light jacket or sweater for evenings
Windbreaker for exposed areas and boat trips
Hiking boots if you plan to hike
Sunscreen and sunglasses (the Canarian sun is deceptive)
Swimsuit (water is cool but many hotels have heated pools)
Short wetsuit if you plan to surf or snorkel

February 2026 events

Practical information

Flights: Lanzarote has direct connections with major European cities. From the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands and Spain there are 3-4 hour flights.

Car rental: Essential for exploring the island. Roads are good and traffic is calm outside Arrecife. Book in advance in February, especially during Carnival.

Accommodation: Lower prices than summer except Carnival week. Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are the main tourist areas. For more tranquility, consider staying inland (Teguise, Haría, Yaiza).

Biosphere Reserve: Lanzarote has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. Respect marked trails, don’t leave litter and follow signs in protected natural areas.
