Lanzarote in November: weather, beaches, Los Finaos and what to do

Lanzarote in November has highs of 24 °C (75 °F), lows of 17 °C (63 °F) and about seven hours of sunshine a day. It rains a little more than in October, almost always in short showers, and the sea holds on to some of the summer’s warmth. The month opens with the Noche de los Finaos and the All Saints’ Day holiday, the north coast is in the middle of the surf season and the fall cultural calendar keeps going. This guide covers what November offers every year: the weather, the sea, the traditions and the plans that work best.

Weather in November: mild and a little wetter

According to AEMET’s climate normals for Lanzarote airport (1981–2010), the average November high is 24.2 °C (75.6 °F) and the average low is 17.2 °C (63 °F), about two and a half degrees below October. Rainfall rises to 15 millimeters, spread over three rainy days on average, and relative humidity is around 69%. The month gets about 207 hours of sunshine, close to seven hours a day.

Days are shorter and the evenings cool down sooner. A light jacket helps after sunset, especially in inland and northern villages such as Haría, Teguise and Tinajo.

Sea and beaches: swim in the south, watch in the north

The water is still mild in November and swimming is comfortable in the middle of the day. Wind and swell decide the beach: the south and southeast are sheltered, and the Papagayo beaches, Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen are the safest choice for a swim.

On the north and west coasts, the Atlantic is in charge. Famara and La Santa are in full surf season, with schools and board rental in Caleta de Famara. On those beaches, swimming means respecting the currents and watching the flags, and on big-swell days it’s better to watch from the shore.

November 1: the Noche de los Finaos and All Saints’ Day

The month opens with the Noche de los Finaos, the Canarian tradition of remembering the dead with stories, roasted chestnuts and the music of ranchos and folk bands. Several of the island’s town councils celebrate it in their squares between the last days of October and November 1, with theater, children’s workshops and tastings, almost always free. What it is, what people eat and where to join in: our guide to the Noche de los Finaos in Lanzarote.

November 1, All Saints’ Day, is a national holiday and many families visit the cemeteries. Some shops and services close or keep shorter hours that day.

Fall culture: books, music and stage

The fall cultural season is still running in November. The Cabildo programs theater, music and talks in Arrecife, at the Teatro El Salinero and the El Almacén cultural center, and the auditoriums at Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes host concerts and shows. The island’s literature festival continues with author talks in several towns.

Many events are free, although those with limited capacity ask you to register in advance. Each month’s cultural agenda has the specific program, with dates, times and prices.

Nature: shearwaters, winter birds and trails

The shearwater rescue campaign continues through November. If you find one on the ground, cover it with a cloth, put it in a cardboard box with air holes and call 112 or the Cabildo’s environmental officers (928 598 548). Don’t give it food or water and don’t throw it into the air. It’s one of the simplest ways to look after the island; there’s more in our guide to sustainable tourism in Lanzarote.

The migratory birds that winter on the coast have settled on the Arrecife tidal flats: curlews, turnstones and herons are easy to spot at low tide between the Castillo de San Gabriel and Punta de La Lagarta.

With milder temperatures, November is a good month for walking. Timanfaya and the surrounding volcanoes are more comfortable to explore than in summer, and the work of César Manrique comes with shorter lines. Bring water and sun protection: the November sun is still strong.

Key dates and booking

The All Saints’ long weekend draws visitors from mainland Spain when November 1 falls close to a weekend; book accommodation and a car early for those dates. The rest of the month is quiet, with more availability before Christmas and the winter high season arrive.

The Canary Islands are one hour behind mainland Spain. If you arrive on a connecting flight, reset your watch when you land.

5. Check the month’s cultural agenda: many events are free but have limited capacity.
