The Casa Museo del Campesino has reopened with a new visit. On Aug 26 the Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo (CACT) announced the reopening of the complex César Manrique built at the island’s geographic center, in Mozaga, with a guided visit led by staff and a self-guided route via QR codes. It is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm, admission is free, and it is one of the CACT’s seven centers across the island.

What the new visit shows

Everything turns on the Fecundity sculpture, the work that rises over the Peña de Tajaste in tribute to the people who farmed the island with little water, constant wind and volcanic soil. From there, eight stops: the threshing floor, the cistern, the camel saddle and the serón pannier; a traditional house where nothing was decorative and every object did two or three jobs; the eruptions of 1730 to 1736, the origin of cultivation on ash that protects the soil and holds moisture; gofio and the mill; the corridor of plows; the crafts that survive and the ones that vanished; the tavern; and the ceramics of Dorotea Armas.

CACT councilor Ángel Vázquez summed up the intent, speaking in Spanish: “It reflects what we were to explain what we are. It is tools, implements, uses and customs, but also collective effort, work, perseverance and identity.” The self-guide can be downloaded from the CACT website.

The Monumento al Campesino sits at the junction of the roads linking Arrecife, Teguise, Tinajo and Yaiza, so it’s on the way on almost any route through central Lanzarote.
