The Volcano Triathlon Lanzarote 2026 celebrates its 42nd edition on Saturday, April 25 at Club La Santa in the municipality of Tinajo. It is the oldest triathlon in Spain and one of the most historic races in Europe: held every year since 1984 on a course that cuts through the volcanic landscape of the island’s northwest, with the Famara cliffs as a backdrop and the trade winds as a constant companion. Olympic distance, 1,000 participants and a mix of European elites and age-group triathletes that turns every edition into an outdoor sports festival.

Distances and course

The Volcano Triathlon is raced over Olympic distance, with start and finish at Club La Santa’s facilities:

Swim — 1.5 km: In the Club La Santa lagoon, a saltwater circuit sheltered from the open sea. Water temperature around 19 °C (66 °F) in April — enough for a short or full wetsuit depending on personal tolerance.

Bike — 40 km: One loop from the transition zone at Club La Santa toward Caleta de Caballo, Soo and Caleta de Famara, to the turnaround point on the Famara-Teguise road. Return along the same route. The stretch runs beneath the Famara cliffs, one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Canary Islands, with the island of La Graciosa visible to the north. Drafting is not permitted (ITU rules apply).

Run — 10 km: Two loops from the Club La Santa stadium toward the village of La Santa and back. A flat, fast course with the sea breeze as a constant.

Relay teams (men’s, women’s or mixed) are also welcome, opening the race to groups where each member completes one discipline.

Volcano Kids: Friday, April 24

The day before the main race, Volcano Kids offers adapted distances for participants aged 7 to 17. Racing starts at 4:30 pm in the Club La Santa lagoon, with staggered start times by age group. Medals and T-shirts for all finishers. The youth event has been a fixture alongside the main race for decades, reinforcing the Volcano’s family-friendly character.

Tips for racing in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is no ordinary triathlon venue. The trade winds average 23 km/h between January and April — enough to slow the bike leg significantly and turn the Famara stretch into a genuine challenge. A few tips that make a real difference:

Wheels: Don’t use rims with a profile higher than 50 mm. Lateral wind can destabilize a deep-section wheel, especially on the exposed Famara section.
Sun protection: SPF 50, no exceptions. UV levels in Lanzarote are high even in April.
Hydration: Carry two bottles on the bike. The route passes through rural areas with no supply points outside the official aid stations.
Wind: Prepare mentally for headwinds. This is not a course for personal bests — it is a course for soaking in the landscape and the experience.

Why Lanzarote is the cathedral of European triathlon

The Volcano Triathlon does not exist in isolation. It is the opening act of a sporting spring that makes Lanzarote essential on the international triathlon calendar. Four weeks later, on May 23, the Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote — one of the toughest races on the European circuit — brings another 1,000 triathletes to a 226 km course that includes 2,500 meters of climbing on the bike leg. Many athletes use the Volcano as a competitive shakedown for IRONMAN.

The island has built four decades of triathlon heritage. The conditions — constant wind, volcanic terrain, stable temperatures, world-class sports infrastructure at Club La Santa — have drawn national teams and professionals from across Europe to train here through the winter months. Lanzarote is not just a triathlon destination: it is where the season is forged.
