The La Geria Special Plan is open for public suggestions until Friday, Sep 25, 2026. The Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa issued a reminder on Sep 1 that the period is still running and asked farmers, winegrowers, bodega owners, landowners and residents of the protected area to read the documents and submit their input before that date.

Key details

The document under review is the Plan Especial del Paisaje Protegido (PEPP) de La Geria, the instrument that will regulate land use inside the protected landscape. It sets out several levels of protection with two stated aims: preserving the volcanic landscape and keeping traditional farming alive. Its centerpiece is the Zona de Uso Tradicional, which covers more than 2,877 hectares and holds almost all of La Geria’s farming and winegrowing.

The Cabildo names pit cultivation, the technique that gives La Geria its look, as the priority system within the area, and recognizes the bodegas as fundamental to conserving the landscape: no vines means no pits, and no pits means no La Geria. The villages inside the boundary are brought into the plan with solutions for existing uses.

Territorial policy councilor Jesús Machín stressed that “there is still time to study the document and submit suggestions.” Cabildo president Oswaldo Betancort added that input “from those who know and work this land is important for producing a document that fits its reality.”

The full documentation for the La Geria Special Plan is published on the Cabildo website, and the Ordenación del Territorio de Lanzarote site summarizes the draft and offers a submission form. Suggestions go to the Cabildo within the deadline; after Sep 25 the plan moves on through the approval process with the input received.
