Lanzarote tourism 2026: the island is earning more from tourism with almost exactly the same number of visitors. Between January and July, 2,034,207 tourists arrived, just 0.7% more than in the same period of 2025, while what each visitor spends per day rose 17.7%. Those are the figures the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa released on Sep 3, and they fit the model the island’s institutions have defended for decades: grow in value, not in volume.

What the figures say

Arrivals held steady: 2,034,207 tourists against 2,019,794 in 2025. Daily spend, what each tourist spends per day on the island, reached €181.90 in the second quarter, up from €154.56 a year earlier. And hotels and apartments took in around €607.1 million between January and July, 6.71% more than the €569 million of 2025.

Across the Canary Islands as a whole, arrivals eased 0.7% over the same period, in a year marked by international uncertainty. Lanzarote held its numbers without needing to attract more people. “We don’t want to base our tourism model on permanently growing the number of visitors,” Cabildo president Oswaldo Betancort said in Spanish.

Where this model comes from

Holding growth back is nothing new here: Lanzarote put a ceiling on tourist beds in 1991 and has been a Biosphere Reserve since 1993. What it means if you’re visiting

For the visitor, this means an island that looks after what it offers and appreciates the tourist who looks after it in return: choosing local shops and restaurants, respecting the rules in protected areas and getting beyond the busiest spots is the most direct way to add to that balance. July grew 6.4% (316,836 tourists), driven by mainland Spain; the Cabildo will wait for the August data before judging the full summer.
