Ocean Lava Lanzarote 2026 (Oct 24): Times and Road Closures

Ocean Lava Lanzarote 2026, the 16th edition of the Puerto del Carmen triathlon, takes place on Saturday, October 24, with the first start at 8 am and Plaza de las Naciones as the race hub. There are three formats, Olympic, Supersprint and Olympic relay, plus a kids’ race, and registration stays open until October 18 or until places run out. For everyone else, the morning brings a lively Avenida de las Playas and road closures in Puerto del Carmen and on the LZ-40.

Update pending: The organizer has published the program and the road-closure plan as provisional. We’ll update this article if any times change.

Ocean Lava Lanzarote 2026 dates and times

Friday, October 23. Race number pickup at Plaza de las Naciones from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 to 8 pm. At 7 pm, technical briefing for athletes.

Saturday, October 24. Gear check-in from 6 to 7:30 am. The Olympic race and relays start at 8:00 am, the Supersprint at 8:10 am. The kids’ race starts at 9:30 am. Awards are at noon in Plaza de las Naciones, and bikes can be collected from 11:15 am.

Formats and courses

Olympic: a 1.5 km swim in one lap off the Puerto del Carmen coast, a 40 km bike ride over three laps of a circuit on the LZ-40, and a 10 km run over two laps of Avenida de las Playas. Drafting is allowed on the bike, and aero bars are not.

Supersprint: a 400 m swim, about 11 km on the bike over one lap of the LZ-40 circuit, and an out-and-back run on Avenida de las Playas. The organizer pitches it as the way in for first-time triathletes.

Olympic relay: teams of three, one person per discipline, over the Olympic distance. Teams can be mixed and of any age.

The swim course is decided on the day according to sea conditions: the organizer has a main course and two alternatives, to the north and to the south.

Registration and prices

Registration is only through the official website and closes on Sunday, October 18 at 11:59 pm, or earlier if places sell out. In late September, the Olympic distance was 82% full and the Supersprint 46%. Current prices: Supersprint, €30; Olympic, €95; relay, €150 per team (€50 per athlete). The race is sanctioned by the Canary Islands Triathlon Federation.

Athletes traveling from other islands get a discount on Fred. Olsen Express with the Tarifa Sport fare, applied automatically to registered participants.

Road closures

The race safety plan sets out these closures:

From Friday the 23rd at 8 am to Saturday the 24th at 4 pm: Avenida de las Playas between Calle Rusia and Calle Yugoslavia. Detour via Calle Rusia, Calle Suiza and Calle Yugoslavia.
Saturday the 24th, 7 am to 2 pm: the Avenida de las Playas closure extends between Calle Noruega and Calle Lapa.
Saturday the 24th, 7 to 11:30 am: Calle Noruega (between Avenida de las Playas and Rambla Islas Canarias), a stretch of Rambla Islas Canarias, and both directions of the LZ-40 between the El Toro roundabout and the Matagorda turnoff.

While the LZ-40 is closed, the recommended way into Puerto del Carmen is via Tías (LZ-505), open throughout, or via Mácher and Puerto Calero toward Calle Reina Sofía. The Matagorda entrance only serves Los Pocillos and Matagorda. Exits from Calle Juan Carlos I onto the LZ-40 close from 5:30 am, and the exit from Calle Reina Sofía toward the airport from 6:30 am. Taxis and buses can cross Calle Noruega via Avenida Francia throughout the closure. If you have a flight that morning, leave Puerto del Carmen via Tías.

Where to watch

Plaza de las Naciones, by the beach, is home to the transition area, the finish and the awards; the swim can be watched from the shore. For spectators, the best part of Ocean Lava Lanzarote 2026 is the run: Olympic athletes pass along Avenida de las Playas twice, so you can see them several times from the promenade without moving. Respect the barriers and the volunteers’ directions, and if you are staying nearby, get around on foot.

The organizer is keeping its environmental commitments for this edition: no single-use plastics at the aid stations, separate waste collection points and shared transport for athletes and spectators.
