Lanzarote Cultural Agenda May 2026: IRONMAN, books and fiestas
The Lanzarote Cultural Agenda May 2026 opens with a book fair that brings Juan José Millás and Máximo Huerta to Arrecife, crosses a week of patron saint fiestas with camels and romerías in the south and culminates with IRONMAN Lanzarote, Europe’s toughest triathlon in its 34th edition. In between: Nacho Vegas presenting his new album at El Salinero, a Sonidos Líquidos Belingueo at Bodega El Grifo, arthouse cinema, school theater and two exhibitions continuing at the CIC El Almacén. May is not just sun and sand — it is the month that best proves the island has as much culture as coastline.

First week: Día de la Cruz and a literary kickoff
The month opens with Día de la Cruz on Saturday, May 3, a tradition still alive in Teguise and Tías: residents decorate their doorways with flower crosses, creating a spontaneous walking route through streets and squares that is one of the most charming moments on the island’s folk calendar. There is no official program — the tradition is experienced by walking through the villages.
On Friday the 2nd, the Cine Club Lanzarote screens Historias del buen valle by José Luis Guerín (7:00 pm, free entry). On Tuesday the 5th, the 25th anniversary gala of A.F.O.L. (Agrupación Folklórica Olaya de Lanzarote) celebrates a quarter century of traditional Canarian music (7:00 pm, free entry with invitation).
La Fiera del Libro: Arrecife fills with literature
From Wednesday, May 7 to Saturday, May 10, Arrecife becomes the island’s literary capital with the 4th edition of La Fiera del Libro de Lanzarote. The lineup brings Juan José Millás, Máximo Huerta, Elísabet Benavent and Marta Jiménez Serrano alongside Canarian voices including Ignacio Romero and Ana Belén Hormiga, who presents the posthumous work of her father, the Lanzarote-born writer Félix Hormiga. Four days of author talks, workshops, a photobook and wine pairing, and two concerts organized by Sonidos Líquidos: Abraham Boba (Friday the 8th) and Fajardo (Saturday the 9th), both at 8:30 pm at the CIC El Almacén. All events are free.

Tied to the fair, the Cine Buñuel screens La vida fuera by Mario Martone (Tuesday the 6th and Wednesday the 7th, 8:00 pm).
Weekend of May 9-10: performing arts, cinema and Latin music
Saturday the 9th brings a triple bill. Escena Lanzarote presents its May show at 8:00 pm — artist and venue to be confirmed by the Cabildo. In parallel, Festival Isla Latina Lanzarote holds its first edition with a night of Colombian and Latin American popular music (ages 18+, tickets via Tickety). And at the CIC El Almacén, Fajardo closes the Fiera del Libro music program.
San Isidro week: patron saint fiestas in the south
Thursday, May 15 is the Día Grande of Uga, the patron saint fiesta honoring San Isidro Labrador in the municipality of Yaiza. Solemn mass, a procession accompanied by the Yaiza Municipal Band and a closing performance at the fairground. The fiestas extend over more than a week with a pregón, verbenas, comedy play-backs, Canarian bola competitions and the traditional romería — one of the most photogenic events in the Canary Islands, with saddled camels, folk groups and traditional Canarian dress.
From May 22 to 25, the XVII Feria Insular de Ganado San Isidro Labrador completes the celebrations: a talk on the Canarian camel, milking demonstrations, traditional cheese-making, vaquera dressage and children’s activities. Program confirmed by the Ayuntamiento de Yaiza.

Sonidos Líquidos Belingueo: Juventude
On Sunday, May 17 at 1:00 pm, Sonidos Líquidos holds its Belingueo at Bodega El Grifo under the title Juventude. The Belingueos are the warm-up events before the main festival: intimate format, among the vineyards, with music and island wine. Tickets via Tickety.
Nacho Vegas at El Salinero
On Wednesday, May 21 at 8:00 pm, Nacho Vegas presents Vidas Semipreciosas — his ninth album — at the Teatro Víctor Fernández Gopar “El Salinero” in Arrecife. One of the most distinctive voices in Spanish songwriting, with a quarter century of work and an album received as one of his most musically open. Tickets: €25. Organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote.

IRONMAN Lanzarote: the big sporting event
On Saturday, May 23, Puerto del Carmen hosts the 34th edition of IRONMAN Lanzarote, Europe’s longest-running long-distance triathlon and one of the hardest in the world: a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike leg with 2,500 m of elevation gain and a full marathon. Over 1,150 athletes, rolling start at 7:00 am at Playa Grande, 100 qualifying slots for the Kona World Championship. The finish line on the Avenida de las Playas fills with spectators well past midnight.
Important: IRONMAN causes road closures across all municipalities on Saturday. Plan your travel in advance.

More cinema and culture
The Cine Buñuel cycle continues in May with Inadaptados: Rock & Roll desesperado (Wednesday the 13th, 8:00 pm). On Saturday the 23rd at 12:00 pm, La Pantalla Chinija offers a family cinema session with actress Cristina Temprano — a date designed for younger audiences that coincides with IRONMAN week.
From May 12 to 15, the Teatro El Salinero hosts the 8th Festival de Teatro Escolar de Lanzarote, with performances by schools from across the island — a project connecting performing arts with the classroom.
Current exhibitions
The CIC El Almacén in Arrecife maintains two open exhibitions throughout May: “La profundidad de silencio” (through August 1, 2026) and “Vacío” by Carlos de Saá (through June 6, 2026). Two contemporary art proposals in dialogue with the island’s volcanic landscape.
Coming up in June
On June 6, Sonidos Líquidos holds its main festival in La Geria — already sold out. On June 28, the brand debuts in La Graciosa with a new format. And between June and July, the Lava Live Festival brings national and international artists to Arrecife. June is shaping up well.
Markets, CACT and the constants
The Teguise market (Sundays) and Haría market (Saturdays) remain active. The seven CACT centers designed by César Manrique maintain their regular program of family activities: workshops at the Cactus Garden (Wednesdays and Fridays), activities at Jameos del Agua and guided tours at the Cueva de los Verdes. Noches de Jameos: every Friday, Jameos del Agua opens at night for dinner inside the volcanic tube followed by a timple concert beside the underground lake. Reservations at cactlanzarote.com (from €55).
